According to Wikipedia, a website (also written as web site) is a collection of web pages and related content that is identified by a common domain name and published on at least one web server. Examples of notable websites are Google, Facebook, Amazon, and Twitter.
Websites are hosted on servers, and require a web browser such as Chrome, Firefox, or Internet Explorer to be visited (either on a computer or mobile device). A website can be accessed directly by entering its URL address or by searching it on a search engine such as Google or Bing.
Originally, websites were categorized by their top-level domains. Some examples include:
Although these top-level domains extensions still exist, they say little about a website's actual content.
What then does it mean to have a website?
I often regard a website as the gateway to the world. All websites wherever they are hosted can actually be viewed in any part of the world provided there is an internet connection and a supported device like smartphones.
Have you heard about the phrase "THE INTERNET NEVER FORGETS"?
What it means is that any material, picture, video, file uploaded / hosted by a website or multiple websites can be very difficult to remove on the internet.
What does it mean for you?
It means that you can also decide how you make your gateway to the outside world. Whether as an individual, business, company, organisation, it is all in your hands.
You can influence what you say or show the world about you or your products by having a website. This makes you unique and people can actually search you or your business specifically via the internet.
